GetMyBoat Sponsorship Program to Support College Sailing

Hampton Roads Sunfish Challenge & Dinghy July 12, 2013 – San Francisco, CA –, the world’s fastest-growing boat rental marketplace for both peer-to-peer and charter watercraft rentals, today announced the official launch of its first of a kind Sponsorship Program in support of college sailing.  GetMyBoat will pledge its first donation under the program to Hampton University’s Sailing Program in the name of the winning Corinthian (amateur) sailor who places first at the Hampton Roads Sunfish Challenge & Dinghy Distance Race to be held on September 21st, 2013, in Hampton, Virginia.

The Hampton Roads Sunfish Challenge & Dinghy Distance Race is a grassroots long distance regatta for dinghies 22 feet and smaller.   The Sunfish, a single sheet cat rigged dinghy is the most popular recreational sailboat ever built, with an estimated 500,000 sold since the early 1950s.

“GetMyBoat’s sponsorship will allow the Hampton Roads Sunfish Challenge & Dinghy Distance Race to reward the hard work of the skippers and crew of Hampton University’s sailing program.  It also allows us to continue to improve our efforts to introduce folks to sailing and recreational, friendly, sailboat racing.  Several of our racers have commented that the Sunfish is the boat that taught them to sail, and we want a regatta that celebrates this boat,” said Jonathan Romero, Event Chairman of the Hampton Roads Sunfish Challenge.

The GetMyBoat Sponsorship Program plans to sponsor three additional races in other popular sailing venues, as well as contribute to various collegiate and youth sailing programs across the US.

“The majority of the sailing community is made up of enthusiastic non-professionals doing it simply for the joy of being in the water and the satisfaction of working in concert with Mother Nature to get to a destination,” said Captain David Wilbar, Business Development Director for the GetMyBoat Sponsorship Program.  “This new program is directed at those passionate amateurs who feel strongly about the importance of passing the sport along to future generations.”

Launched in January 2013, the GetMyBoat platform has grown to more than 9,000 listings of boats across 50 countries worldwide, from California to Croatia to Sydney Harbor in Australia to the shores of Saint-Tropez.  As the largest rental platform in the world, provides the widest representation of rentable watercraft available online, from kayaks to 100-foot yachts.  The site allows boat owners to list their boats at no cost, including photos, boat specs, pricing, capacity, and contact information.

“GetMyBoat is all about giving as many people as possible the opportunity to experience being out on the water, so we’re proud to team up with collegiate programs to support amateur and youth sailing,” said Bryan Petro, Head of Product for GetMyBoat.   “The best boaters understand that boating is part of a culture and a community and it’s an honor for us to be a part of that community and to invest in its future growth.”

  1. If you live a life of make-believe, your life isn’t worth anything until you do something that does challenge your reality. And to me, sailing the open ocean is a real challenge, because it’s life or death.
